ROBERTO ANTONIONE

Secretary General, Central European Initiative (CEI)

Roberto was born in Novara on June 15, 1953.

He was awarded a degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Milan.

The public and parliamentary activities:

2001–2006, XIV legislature: senator. Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for European Affairs. The representative of Italy during the conclusion of the Rome Treaty in 2003. He was authorized to officially sign on behalf of Italy the treaties of the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union.

2006–2008, XV legislature: senator. The Deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Group and a member of the Committee for Foreign Affairs.

2008–2013, XVI legislature: a member of the Parliament. The Head of the Committee for Foreign Affairs. The Secretary of the parliamentary delegation to the Council of Europe. The Chairperson of the parliamentary delegation on the Central European Initiative.

International activities:

President of the International Expert Group for the Reform of the Central European Initiative (2010).

Special Advisor of the Secretary General of the Central European Initiative (2015–2018).

Secretary General of the Central European Initiative since January 1, 2019.

Awards:

Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

The Grand Cross of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, awarded by Most Holy John Paul II.

Multiple Italian and foreign awards.

Medal of Honor from the Central European Initiative, awarded by Austria.
